My experience
Most designers choose a sofa. I read drawings first.
Before a single piece of furniture is specified, before a palette is chosen, before the mood board exists , I’m in the technical drawings. Reading load bearing walls, reviewing electrical connections schematics and cross referencing mechanical services with the ceiling height I need for that bespoke cornice detail.
This isn’t typical. But then, neither is my background.
Twenty years as an electrical engineer on power stations and energy infrastructure across the UK and Europe taught me something the design schools cant, beauty without technical literacy is just decoration waiting to fail. I trained formally as an interior designer when working in US, but the engineering never left.
When I walk a site, I’m not just seeing what could be. I’m reading what is in every dimension, every constraint hidden inside a set of CAD drawings that most designers hand to a contractor without looking twice.
What does that mean for a Client?
It means I catch problems before they become expensive surprises. It means I can hold a conversation with structural engineers, M&E consultants, and project managers as an equal, not a passenger.
Interior design is often sold as feeling. Mine is feeling, backed by engineering.
